Çatalca

Çatalca is a city and a rural district in Istanbul, Turkey, as Ancient Metr(a)e a former bishopric and Latin Catholic titular see.

It is in East Thrace, on the ridge between the Marmara and the Black Sea. Most people living in Çatalca are either farmers or those visiting vacation homes. Many families from Istanbul come to Çatalca during weekends to hike in the forests or have picnics.

History

Antiquity

Çatalca's ancient Greek name was Ergískē (Ἐργίσκη). Ergiske (Ancient Greek: Ἐργίσκη) was an ancient Greek city in Thrace, located in the region of the Propontis.

According to Suida, the Greek name is after Ergiscus (Ἐργίσκος), a son of Poseidon through the naiad (nymph) Aba (Ἄβα). In Greek mythology, Aba was a nymph and she is presumed to be a daughter of the river Hebros. The site is now occupied in part by modern Çatalca.

Under Roman rule, it was named Metrae or Metre and was important enough in the Late Roman province of Europa (Roman province)|Europa]] to become a suffragan of its capital Heraclea's Metropolitan Archbishop, yet was to fade.

Aba (film)

ABÁ is the high-budget Sinhalese film directed by Jackson Anthony, based on the historical legend of King Pandukabhaya which is set in Sri Lanka more than 2400 years ago. The title is derived from "Pandu Aba", another name for the title character.

Anthony’s son, Sajitha Anuttara, portrays Pandukabhaya. The film also features Malini Fonseka, Ravindra Randeniya,Sriyantha Mendis, Sabeetha Perera and many other popular actors.

It was released in Sri Lanka on 8 August 2008. Plans are being made to screen this film in several other countries, including China, Italy and Australia.

Production

Justin Belagamage and Rajindra Jayasinghe produced this film for Mandakini Creations (Pvt) Ltd. Production began halfway through 2007. The film was shot at different remote places in Sri Lanka. It is the most expensive Sinhalese movie to date, costing more than 60 million Rupees ($500.000). The set for the royal palace alone reportedly cost around 6.5 million Rupees ($60.000).

Drawing room

A drawing room is a room in a house where visitors may be entertained. The name is derived from the sixteenth-century terms withdrawing room and withdrawing chamber, which remained in use through the seventeenth century, and made their first written appearance in 1642. In a large sixteenth- to early eighteenth-century English house, a withdrawing room was a room to which the owner of the house, his wife, or a distinguished guest who was occupying one of the main apartments in the house could "withdraw" for more privacy. It was often off the great chamber (or the great chamber's descendant, the state room or salon) and usually led to a formal, or "state" bedroom.

In eighteenth-century London, the royal morning receptions that the French called levées were called "drawing rooms", with the sense originally that the privileged members of court would gather in the drawing room outside the king's bedroom, where he would make his first formal public appearance of the day.

Salon, India

Salon (Hindi: सलोन), is a town and a tehsil as well as nagar panchayat in Raebareli district in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Geography

It is located at 26°02′N 81°27′E / 26.03°N 81.45°E / 26.03; 81.45. and has an average elevation of 110 metres (360 feet). It has a rich history which is deeply entrenched in Sufi traditions, the Khanqah-i-Karimia is a spiritual centre within the town. The Salon Bazaar is also a popular attraction for the adjoining villages. Nearby villages are Paksaravan (8.4 km), Bewali (2 km), Matka (4 km), Khatiyara (5 km), Sarvariyan ka Purva(7 km), Umari 6.5km, Ataganj Usari (3 km).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Salon had a population of 13,166. Males constitute 51.30% of the population and females 48.70%. Salon has an average literacy rate of 49.54%. In Salon, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Champagne Salon

Champagne Salon is a small producer of critically acclaimedChampagne made in the blanc de blancs style. Salon, along with Delamotte, is part of the Laurent-Perrier group since 1989. It is regarded as one of the greatest Champagnes on the market.

History

Champagne Salon was founded by Eugène Aimé Salon in the early 20th century. Salon was convinced that the Chardonnay grapes from the Le Mesnil-sur-Oger vineyards could produce wine with favorable levels of finesse and elegance without the need to add Pinot noir or Pinot Meunier. Around the turn of the 20th century, Salon began producing a Chardonnay-only cuvée that he shared privately with friends. The first commercial vintage of Champagne Salon was in 1921 and by 2006, the house has released only 37 vintages under the Salon label. Following Eugène Aimé Salon's death in 1943, his sister inherited the company which was eventually sold to Laurent-Perrier in 1989. Since then, Salon is effectively part of the combined Salon-Delamotte house.
